VW Golf mk3

This model entered the market in 1991 and then made a splash with its streamlined shapes. Against the background of its predecessors with square "muzzles", the car looked super innovative. It was produced with hatchback, convertible, sedan, station wagon bodies and sold 4.8 million copies around the world, entering the list as one of the most successful models of the manufacturer.

Despite its considerable age, this car is still very popular in the secondary market. But you need to understand that in the best case, such a machine will be “adult”, therefore, breakdowns and failures of components and mechanisms of the 3rd Golf are not uncommon due to age.

And so that you know exactly what spare parts for Volkswagen Golf 3 (1991-1999) you should have in stock, we have prepared for you a small overview of the most common diseases of cars of this model.

Engine

The main thing in the car is, of course, the “heart”. The Golf 3 model was produced with a wide variety of engines from 1.4 to 2.9 liters. Both gasoline and diesel engines were popular. But for the latter there was a real hunt. It was believed that he was simply unkillable. Even if we lower today's high fuel consumption per 100 km, it cannot be said that a diesel engine is the best choice.

The first thing you have to prepare money for is the details of the connecting rod and piston group. Many new owners have to change them, fortunately, finding them for sale is not a problem and the price does not bite much. But the main problem lies in the mechanical turbine of the diesel engine. She dies safely by 300 thousand kilometers, which the previous owners are gaining.

Therefore, sooner or later, a new owner is waiting for the purchase of a turbine. Usually they are looking for a decent option at a showdown (and they find it, since there are a lot of them), but you can try and repair it. As practice shows, such attempts do not end very successfully - either the master will come across a “kulibin” or, having repaired one element of the turbine, another one fails. Repairing the whole thing completely will be more expensive than taking the same “bush” for analysis.

Gasoline engines are less problematic in this regard. They are easier to repair and will keep in much better condition than diesel ones. The weakest point of gasoline units is the chain. You have to change every 150 thousand kilometers.

Also, carefully monitor the heat exchanger of the cooling system. If it malfunctions, the engine may overheat and, as a result, the tightness between the head and the cylinder block will be broken and antifreeze will get into the oil.

Transmission

Automatic is a fairly hassle-free mechanism. Change the oil in a timely manner and there will be no serious problems with it. Also, the handbrake on machines with an "automatic" tends to turn sour.

"Mechanics" has also proven itself well. Sometimes such a problem arises with it: the mechanism starts to include first gear instead of reverse. This is a clear indication of the failure of the plastic bushings.

Chassis

The original suspension from the factory was of good quality and served the first car owners well. But it is no longer possible to find a Golf 3 with her, taking into account her age, and it is not necessary, since in any case she has worked out her resource several times over such a period. It is unlikely that anyone will recognize what was put in as a replacement, so the suspension should also be written down as mandatory expenses in the first place. In steering, every second owner periodically encounters knocks that cause play in the tip thrust joint.

The suspension itself is easy to replace and maintain and extremely economical. Also, when buying not the cheapest China, you can count on a good working resource, but the dismantling is full of suspension arms with a huge residual resource.

Salon

Here you will have a rich field for investing money and effort. Worn-out door seals through which it blows mercilessly. Clogged stove radiator, which already heats poorly, a faulty glove box lock. It is also worth saying about door locks that they like to freeze tightly in winter. It is likely that there are problems with the speedometer, tachometer and instrument dial illumination.

Power windows are a sore spot in the cabin. Mechanical handles are much more reliable. Seat upholstery due to age looks in most cases tattered. The only thing to which there are no complaints is the quality of the plastic. Such scratch resistance today you will find only in luxury cars.
